In one of his most popular holiday songs, Elvis Presley wondered, “Why can’t every day be like Christmas?” Today, thanks to a bit of ingenuity and a dose of creativity, the King of Rock and Roll’s question has been answered with a resounding “It can be!”
From Pennsylvania to Pasadena, destinations abound that celebrate Christmas all year long—and it’s not the only festivity to garner such treatment. Those who prefer the spooky more than the merry can also find numerous locales honoring Halloween year-round. Book a stay at one of these unique accommodations to indulge in holiday fun no matter what season it is.
If you look forward to the thrills and chills of Halloween for months ahead, you must check out one of these scary-good experiences.
The Roxbury (Roxbury, New York)
Located in the Catskills, the Roxbury actually has two locations with multiple properties—tower cottages, a mansion, and a motel—each of which features dazzling themed rooms. For those who love Halloween, check out the motel room that boasts both “an enchanted forest vibe” and a “Snow White’s evil stepmother” theme, transporting you straight into a fairytale. Want something a bit more daring? There’s also the wonderfully macabre yet elegant Dracula’s Fangs cottage, which boasts a gothic castle interior and dramatic red-and-black decor throughout.
The Stanley Hotel (Estes Park, Colorado)
The Stanley, Stephen King’s muse for The Shining, embraces its history in every way imaginable. This is especially true this October, when it will offer haunting special events hosted by paranormal experts. But its creepy vibes can be felt throughout the year as well thanks in part to its tours, which include one inspired by the novel/movie and one conducted at night for added eeriness. And if you’re feeling truly brave, book one of the Stanley’s four reportedly haunted “spirited” rooms—including Room 217, where King stayed and was inspired to write his 1977 book.
SugarMynt Gallery (South Pasadena, California)
With a tagline of “Where every day is Halloween,” it’s no surprise that this place goes all out with the thrills, especially since it’s located in the city where the original Halloween movie was filmed. In addition to offering horror and spooky artwork for purchase and various exhibits to tour throughout the year, SugarMynt provides stays at its ScareBnB, a crimson-colored room strewn with ghoulish decor. Best of all? The building sits right next door to the Halloween house. You can almost hear Michael Myers’s footsteps!
Who wants to wait until after Thanksgiving to deck the halls? Take a trip to one of these destinations, where you can get a jump start on the most wonderful time of the year.
Papa’s Christmas Cabin (Gouldsboro, Pennsylvania)
If you prefer the benefits of a house, then this privately owned two-bed, two-bath cabin in northeastern Pennsylvania might just be the perfect Christmas stay. It’s decorated from top to bottom, inside and out in rustic holiday chic, with its cozy bedrooms decked in holiday-hued greenery and red plaid and its grand living room featuring a garland-adorned fireplace and fully lit Christmas tree. Entertainment options abound as well thanks to the house’s proximity to Pocono Mountain ski resorts, water parks, and shopping outlets.
The Inn at Christmas Place (Pigeon Forge, Tennessee)
Perhaps no place in the country goes all out with its year-round celebration of Christmas like this establishment, starting with its eye-catching tree-lit pond and Bavarian architecture that greet you upon arrival. The stunning front lobby takes it one step further with elegant Christmas displays in every corner, and as you head downstairs into the lower lobby, you’ll find a 25-foot-tall glockenspiel that plays Christmas music at the top of every hour. Add in a singing Santa, holiday-themed rooms and suites, and the South’s largest Christmas store right across the parkway, and you have a perfect holiday destination tied up in a bow.
Hotel North Pole (North Pole, Alaska)
Yes, you can actually visit the North Pole! (Well, the town, anyway.) Located right on North Santa Claus Lane a mere fifteen minutes or so from Fairbanks, this stay gets you as close as humanly possible to Santa’s mythical workshop. The Santa Suite—the only holiday-themed room in the hotel—is a particular favorite of couples and military families alike for special occasions, and parents can opt for the Santa Experience, which includes a visit from Saint Nick and stockings for each child. Even better, the merriment extends beyond the hotel grounds since it’s conveniently located less than a mile from the Santa Claus House gift shop.
The excitement of the holidays is no longer confined to a few months per year, thanks to accommodations such as these. By enjoying the season whenever you wish, you can revel in the joy of being a kid again any time your heart desires.
Whether you’re curating pieces for your new home or making elegant upgrades to your longtime abode, furniture shopping can feel like a whirlwind as you peruse the aisles or websites of retailers. There are so many important features to consider, from size and shape to colors and patterns, all of which are crucial to selecting the right product. But there’s another essential factor to consider before you buy: quality craftsmanship.
Well-made pieces constructed from sturdy materials aren’t just more visually stunning—they’re also far more likely to stay with you for many years. Luckily, you don’t have to set your search filters to the top end of the price range to find furniture that lasts. Even affordable options from lower-cost retailers and secondhand shops can wow guests and become family heirlooms someday. Follow this simple good-furniture guide to help you hunt for products that will perfectly elevate your design scheme.
It may seem tough at first glance to distinguish authentic, well-crafted wooden furniture from flimsy imitation alternatives, especially as they become more realistic looking. There is, however, a reliable test you can use when shopping for wooden chairs, tables, and more: give them a lift. Furniture made from natural wood like pine or oak will be substantially heavier than that made of plastic or particleboard. As another assessment of strength, give pieces with multiple joints a firm wiggle. Good wooden furniture should be steadfast, and its parts shouldn’t move independently unless they’re clearly intended to do so (e.g., drawers and cabinet doors).
If you’re shopping from a secondhand store, verify that any products you find are still in good condition. Some scratches or scuff marks may be acceptable, but the wood should not reveal any discoloration, soft spots, or musty odors, which could signify that a piece is unlikely to hold for much longer.
Naturally, you’ll need to get up close with furniture to gauge its quality, a reality that may make shopping online a risky decision. If you do decide to go this route, only procure goods from digital retailers with excellent reviews, detailed product descriptions, and a clear money-back guarantee. Also, consider buying a small decorative item first to test the store’s quality promise—then you can feel more confident throwing cash at a bigger investment piece.
Genuine stone has been beloved for centuries thanks to its top-tier durability and resistance to the elements. However, like wood, it is fairly easy to mimic with plastics and other inauthentic materials. But imitation versions of marble, slate, and other stones always fail one major assessment: the temperature test. Natural stone should feel cold to the touch, an effect you can attribute to its high thermal conductivity, which allows it to transfer heat quickly. That means if you touch an earthy-looking table, stool, or bench and it feels room temperature, you’re likely dealing with an imposter.
Even authentic stone can degrade over time, so to ensure that you take home an enduring piece, look it over for signs of damage. These may include stains, edge or corner cracks, or large or uneven gaps between the stone and another material (like a metal border or wooden legs).
Metal, like stone, is usually cold to the touch when genuine, making it crucial to get hands on with this type of furniture when shopping. Additionally, give it the wiggle test to confirm it has sturdy joints, and evaluate secondhand pieces for rust or peeling paint. To avoid such damage from occurring on items you intend to put outdoors, it might be better to opt for imitation metals that are more weather hardy. But true iron and steel are among the sturdiest and longest-lasting wares for your indoor furnishings.
A necessity for living rooms and a comfortable option for dining or bedroom pieces, upholstered furniture is the kind that’s perfect to sink into at the end of a long day. To avoid hearing a rip when you sit back or seeing stuffing leak from your cushions, keep a keen eye when making your selections. As you shop, inspect upholstered lining or cushions for straight, even seams without loose threads, and check patterns to ensure that there’s consistency rather than awkward breaks where two fabric panels meet.
Just as essential to consider is your choice of material, which will largely depend on your lifestyle. Pet-owning and child-rearing shoppers should seek out robust fabrics like wool and may also prefer ones with a high double-rub count, a measure of how much abrasion from sitting and lounging a fabric can handle before it starts to fray; the furniture experts at Calgary Interiors recommend upholstery with a rating between 12,000 and 20,000 rubs. You can find this figure on a product’s tag or fabric swatch or ask a store representative for details.
More delicate-yet-refined fabrics such as velvet can’t handle quite so many rubs, but they may still call your name for the luxe effect they add to any room. To verify that you’re in the presence of a genuine beauty, check the manufacturer’s label (not the store’s price tag), which will reveal the upholstery’s fabric type.
Additionally, there are various types of filling materials available, each offering distinct benefits like plushness or firm support. No particular one is necessarily more optimal than another, so this will be a more subjective decision. Simply touch furniture to determine if it offers what you’re looking for; again, this may make shopping for upholstered furniture in person more preferable.
If you’d rather save yourself the hassle of putting every piece of furniture under a magnifying glass, there’s an alternative: find a brand, interior designer, or retailer you trust. There’s no better proof of quality than living with pieces and experiencing their reliability, so if you’re hungry for new finds, track down the origins of your current favorites or seek recommendations from a loved one.
Most importantly, stress quality over pure aesthetics or cost savings as you shop. Florida-based interior designer Laetitia Laurent advises against decorating with what she calls “fast furniture,” or poorly made, low-cost pieces that keep up with short-lived trends. “If you buy trendy and inexpensive furniture, it will break down quickly,” she says. “There’s an old French saying: ‘You have to be very rich to buy cheap stuff.’” High-quality furniture, on the other hand, will stand the test of time with its superior craftsmanship, remaining part of your home and family for years to come.
When the temperatures start dropping in autumn, our desire for comfort foods goes up. And one time-honored type of home-cooked fare that can uniquely satisfy such longings is Italian. Cozy up to this classic cuisine with these delicious recipes from the Italian Coastal cookbook, which will get the season off to a sensational start for you and your loved ones.
Heat up chilly fall nights with this pasta recipe, which is bursting with chili-infused cherry tomatoes mixed with two cheeses.

This pasta is inspired by the volcanic island of Stromboli in the Aeolian Islands and its fiery unpredictable nature. I love this dish as it delivers on flavor and deliciousness with minimal effort. All that’s required is putting a dish of tomatoes in the oven, followed by the ricotta, cooking the pasta, and uniting the two in the baking dish. I like to think of it as an ode to Stromboli through spice and domed ricotta.

Mixing pistachio cream with panna cotta is an indulgent twist on a classic, bringing a nutty sweetness to the cream as well as acting as a second setting agent, meaning you need less gelatin. I serve these in cocktail glasses and never turn them out, mainly because their green color doesn’t look as attractive domed on a plate as it does sitting in a glass topped with chopped pistachios or a few fresh raspberries.

Your home is your sanctuary from the outside world, and yet even the most harmonious spaces can be plagued by pesky problems. From creaking doors to scuffed floors, common issues can chip away at your peace of mind and detract from the comfort you’re after. But with a dash of creativity and a sprinkle of know-how, you may be able to easily fix them and return tranquility to your home.
Loud hinges can be a persistent annoyance, grating on your nerves every time you open and close the door. Fortunately, those squeaks can be simple to silence since they’re often just caused by excess friction between the components. First, check for signs of dirt, paint, or rust on the hinges; if you spot any, do your best to deep-clean each component to remove the buildup. Then apply a spray lubricant to the pins and pivot points, using the attached tube to get into the small crevices and better your chances of significantly reducing the noise. (WD-40 would work for this, but note that it may not be the most effective long-term option.) Once you’re satisfied with the results, carefully wipe away any excess lube so it doesn’t drip onto your door or floor, especially since it is often flammable.
Beyond squeaking, you may also find that one of your doors has begun to stick and require excessive force to close, which is not only frustrating but also concerning since this issue can eventually cause damage to the door and doorframe. To address it, try tightening the screws holding in both the strike plate and the hinges; they may have loosened over time, resulting in misalignment. If that doesn’t work, removing the door and sanding down its edges slightly may create enough clearance to keep it from sticking. Just be sure to measure carefully and conservatively, sand evenly, and test the door’s fit occasionally to avoid overdoing it.
Your home may have a variety of flooring types you have to maintain, each of which can pose unique challenges. Real hardwood floors, for instance, are beautiful but prone to scratching. Luckily, there’s a simple yet unexpected tool that can effectively eliminate those inevitable blemishes: a walnut. All you have to do is rub the walnut over the scratch several times, rub in the oil left behind using your fingers, and buff it with a soft rag. The spot will absorb the oil from the walnut, making it seemingly disappear.
As for tiled bathrooms or kitchens, you may have noticed your pristine grout slowly turning grimy and discolored. Remarkably, a simple mixture of dish soap, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide may be the perfect solution for remedying this. Combine 1 teaspoon of dish soap with ½ cup of baking soda and ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide, spread the paste over the grout, and let it sit for five to ten minutes before scrubbing. If that doesn’t cut it, you could opt for a grout pen, which acts as both a paint and sealer to refresh the grout. The application process may be tedious, but the bright, clean results will be worth it.
Anyone with carpet in their home knows the struggle of trying to get rid of the dents that appear whenever you rearrange your furniture for a gathering or simply to refresh your spaces. To remedy this situation, all you need is some ice. Lay a few ice cubes on any dents, and allow them to fully melt. Once they have, blot the area with a cloth and run your fingers over the carpet, which should loosen the fibers and remove the dent.
The ultimate household aggravation may just be a window that refuses to open smoothly, especially when you want some fresh air. But before you throw in the towel and resort to costly repairs or replacements, there are a few steps you can try to fix the issue. Start by cleaning the window tracks and frames thoroughly, removing any dirt or debris that could be hindering movement. Also check for dried paint that may be preventing the window from opening, being sure to scrape off any that’s in the way. If the window still sticks, apply a silicone-based lubricant to the inside and outside of the tracks to reduce friction, repeatedly opening and closing the window to distribute it. And if the issue still persists, cease any attempts to force the window to open; it could be a sign of a larger problem that requires professional repairs.
Cleaning your windows can be a satisfying task—that is, until you step back and notice they’re covered in streaks that obscure your views. A good solution for getting that ideal streak-free shine is E-Cloth’s eco-friendly window cleaner kit, which requires only water and a little bit of elbow grease. Wet the waffle-weave cleaning cloth, scrub all over the window, and follow up with the drying and polishing cloth. This will effectively eliminate dust, grease, and grime and leave you with a clear window. And since both cloths are reusable, you just need to put them through the wash and pack them away for your next cleaning day.
Don’t let small hindrances take away from your home’s peacefulness. Instead, roll up your sleeves and give these solutions a try—they may just help make your spaces that much more relaxing.
