Where will you find wintertime inspiration this month? As always, it's a pleasure to send you this magazine.
As winter’s cloak hangs on, spring can feel like a long way off. But don’t let this dreary season dampen your spirits; instead, take a cue from Denmark, which consistently appears on the World Happiness Report as one of earth’s most cheerful countries. Despite living in such a cold climate, its citizens are experts at finding joy in everyday life, and central to this happiness is the concept of hygge, a term that’s hard to translate exactly into English but can be described as a feeling of well-being marked by coziness, togetherness, and contentment. So sit back and discover how adopting this Danish way of living can make your days brighter both now and throughout the year.
Pronounced “hoo-ga,” hygge dates back centuries, though it only recently became well-known in the United States. Blowing onto the scene here in 2016, it sparked many a decorating and fashion trend along with numerous lifestyle books on the topic. With its focus on comfort, hygge is particularly well-suited for the winter months, turning a mundane afternoon stuck indoors into a delightful experience. But even year-round, embracing this concept may just help you strengthen your relationships and boost your overall happiness.
There are many ways to make the areas of your life more hyggelig (hygge-like), from your environment to your social life. Give these few core ideas a try to get started.
Danish winters can be long and dreary, so Danes place a high priority on making the home a sanctuary from the harsh elements. To maximize the limited daylight during these months, they often use light or muted colors on their walls and in their decor. Similarly, you can make your spaces more inviting by adopting a palette of whites, grays, beiges, or light blues and greens. Perhaps more essential, though, are candles—per the European Candle Association, Denmark burns the most candles per person of any country in the continent. Placing a few scentless ones around your home or even building a fire in your fireplace can create an intimate glow and a relaxing atmosphere for ultimate coziness.
Beyond candles, consider your other lighting as well. For lamps and overhead lights, opt for light bulbs with a warm temperature or the ability to dim; you could also utilize smart bulbs that can be programmed to emit light in various subdued hues. Hanging string lights, such as around doorways or above your bed, is another excellent way to craft a soothing ambience in your various spaces.
When it comes to decorating, a minimalistic Scandinavian style can lend a sense of calmness. Choose streamlined wood furnishings upholstered with natural fabrics, and bring in the therapeutic qualities of nature by adding some lush potted plants. And no home is truly hyggelig without pillows, bedding, and blankets for warmth and comfort. Select ones with a soft texture and preferably made of natural materials, such as an organic linen duvet cover set for your bed or an alpaca wool throw for your sofa.
Lastly, consider designating an area of your home as a hyggekrog, or cozy spot. From a sunny window seat to a tiny reading nook, this is your own personal space to sit back, relax, and savor the pleasures of life.
All that said, you don’t have to stay in your abode to practice hygge; you can surround yourself with comforting vibes anywhere. Venture to a local café to sip your favorite brew, or hop in your car for a meandering scenic drive. You could also bundle up and head out on a nature walk—spending time outdoors is important in Danish life. And for an ideal hygge experience anywhere, choose versatile clothing in natural fibers designed to keep you most comfortable, like hyggesokker (warm socks), a cotton T-shirt, and a soft wool sweater.
A large part of hygge is finding happiness in everyday joys, so try to build out time in your schedule, no matter how busy it is, to do what makes you smile. Perhaps it’s donning your favorite college sweatshirt or pair of slippers at the end of a long day, enjoying a delicious piece of pizza on a Friday night, or working on a crossword puzzle over the weekend. By pausing to appreciate life’s little details, you can infuse more joy into your day-to-day and develop a stronger sense of gratitude, helping to boost your overall sense of contentment.
A cornerstone of the Nordic lifestyle is cherishing times with family and friends, and they may be on to something there—being with people you care about can ease stress, make your life more meaningful, and improve your mood. You don’t have to do anything fancy or follow an involved itinerary; what matters most is appreciating each other’s company and building bonds, such as by catching up in a quick chat or playing a game of checkers together. Whatever you do, refrain from being on your phone. Reading texts or scrolling through your social feed will only take you away from the moment. When you’re fully focused on your loved ones, you can better connect and fully enjoy your time together.
Ultimately, what hygge looks like can vary from individual to individual, so don’t get hung up on the details. As long as it brings coziness to your life, it counts. Adopt this therapeutic approach in your daily living, and you may just find that you experience a greater sense of peace and well-being.

Each year, snowy weather descends on the great expanse of peaks, lakes, and forests of the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate New York, transforming them into a dreamy winter wonderland. And with its picturesque landscape, thrilling outdoor sports, and charming small towns, the area offers an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages.
Given that the Adirondacks encompass more than six million acres, though, an escape to them requires narrowing down your options a bit. You’ll find two of the best places to consider nestled deep in the High Peaks: the quaint villages of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. Check out this guide to these dream destinations for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts, giving you a jump start on planning the ultimate getaway.
The Olympic site for the 1932 and 1980 Winter Games, Lake Placid provides an infinitely varied playground, especially for those who enjoy a good adrenaline rush. Perhaps the best place to find such adventure is at Whiteface Mountain, a resort that features a vast number of options for snowboarders, skiers, and tubers alike. There are mild runs for beginners, demanding slopes for experts (including the Slides, a double-black-diamond series of chutes), and terrain parks for those who enjoy getting creative with jumps and rails. And at 4,867 feet high, its top provides amazing sweeping views of the neighboring mountains and valleys.
If you’re looking for a calmer activity that still lets you take in the natural beauty of the area, Lake Placid has you covered as well with spots for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. With hundreds of miles of developed paths and backcountry routes, you can locate the ideal terrain fit for your degree of ability. Check out the 50-kilometer Jackrabbit Trail that spans from Keene to Paul Smiths—passing through Lake Placid—or take a guided snowshoe trip with a knowledgeable local guide, who can provide insights on the flora, fauna, and history of the region. Another option is ice-skating on Mirror Lake, which sits in the middle of the village and is backdropped against the breathtaking Adirondack Mountains.
Prefer to skip out on the physical activities but still want to partake in the excitement? Celebrate the area’s rich winter sports legacy by visiting the Olympic Museum, home to the second-largest collection of Winter Olympic artifacts in North America, or by catching an event like bobsledding or luge at the Olympic Center or Mt. Van Hoevenberg. There’s always something going on at these sites no matter the time of year.
Whatever your itinerary, long days can zap your energy. To soothe worn-out muscles and boost the spirit, consider scheduling a rejuvenating spa treatment, such as aromatherapy or a hot stone massage. Try the spa at the Mirror Lake Inn, complete with a salt wall and steam room where you can, as the website states, “breathe deeply and unwind” as the salt particles “detoxify your lungs, sinuses, and skin.”
Finally, returning to comfortable lodging is the perfect way to complete the day. Lake Placid has a range of offerings to fit every budget and inclination, whether your taste is for a luxurious resort and its contemporary conveniences or a rustic rental cabin tucked away in the woods. Consider, for instance, Lake Placid Lodge, the only hotel on the town’s namesake lake. Between the stunning views of the water and Whiteface Mountain, roaring fires in the outdoor hearths, and fine dining on the expansive porch, you may never want to end your trip.
Just ten miles down the road from Lake Placid is Saranac Lake, a somewhat more laid-back village offering equal opportunities for winter adventures. Check out Mt. Pisgah Recreation Center, where families can enjoy gentle slopes for downhill skiing, two runs for racing on inner tubes, and several trails for traversing on snowshoes. Or head over to the North Country Community College, which features a hill that is the perfect sledding spot and family-fun setting. Engage in simple pleasures like building snowmen, battling in snowball fights, and making snow angels, then hop over to the Blue Moon Cafe to warm up with some fresh chocolate chip pancakes.
Another winter classic here is ice fishing. Whether your level of experience with angling is high or low, the excitement of catching fish from a frozen lake is unforgettable. If you’re just starting out, many local outfitters provide equipment rentals as well as guided trips to ensure a complete experience. There are many good areas to choose from, but Lake Colby just outside the downtown area is always a hot spot for this activity, lending good times with loved ones as you see what you can catch.
Beyond outdoor sports, Saranac Lake is also home to a thriving artistic community thanks to artists and creatives seeking inspiration from the untamed terrain, resulting in many galleries, theaters, and public art projects to explore. The Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery, for instance, showcases new exhibits every month, hosting an opening night reception the first Friday. Meanwhile, the Pendragon Theatre is the town’s only year-round company, offering both engaging shows and educational programs to inspire budding young writers. And be on the lookout for artwork lurking around town, like Tessie the serpent. The brainchild of several middle school students, you’ll find her bursting through the lawn on Woodruff Street.
Complementing its vibrant cultural scene, Saranac Lake presents a range of lovely accommodations ideal for those wanting a quiet haven. Hotel Saranac and Saranac Waterfront Lodge are top-notch options for their views of the surrounding nature and tempting amenities—including a heated pool and day spa—as are the many rustic inns, cabins, and cottages. You may even come across little bed-and-breakfasts that were once historic Cure Cottages, designated sanatoriums for those in need of long-term care. Whatever you choose, you’re sure get a perfect respite to retreat to at the close of each day.
The Adirondacks have something to offer everyone, whether your search is for adventure, rest, or quality family time. Consider booking your next winter paradise at one of these or the many other idyllic Upstate New York villages, and create a lifetime of memories with those you love.
From experiments in a tiny apartment kitchen to the highly frequented aisles of popular retailers like Whole Foods, Pipcorn has come quite a long way over the years. Check out the fascinating history of this company and what makes its snacks so unique.
Pipcorn’s story began in 2011 when siblings Jeff and Jen Martin were packing up her apartment in Chicago for a move. Hungry for a snack, they decided to reach for the nearest nourishment that wasn’t boxed up: a packet of heirloom popcorn. Jen had brought it home from the health-food store where she worked, but its unusual coloring perhaps made it seem a tad less appealing than the average bag of yellow-glazed microwave popcorn kernels. Still, the Martin siblings were peckish enough to give it a go.
The results were shocking. Despite it popping surprisingly small, it turned out to be the most delicious popcorn they’d ever eaten. They instantly craved more but discovered that these grains were difficult to come by. Undeterred, they went right to the source by tracking down the Indiana farmer who grew the kernels.
Now in reach of virtually endless quantities of heirloom popcorn, an idea popped into the Martins’ heads: to recreate that winner of a recipe and share the wealth with the whole world. So they teamed up with Jeff’s wife, Teresa, and the trio officially founded Pipcorn.
Of course, the name and initial recipe were only the first steps. Pipcorn’s founders faced an uphill battle in getting their name out there and making people aware that their miniature, distinct snack was a winner. Fueled by a shared passion, they whipped up batch after batch in their home kitchens using simple tools like an ordinary spaghetti pot, packing servings in handstamped paper bags. They then slotted spots at events like Smorgasburg Market, New York City’s bustling open-air food fair, and set up an online shop to ship out their products to curious customers.
Those early days were long and sometimes grueling for the founders, given their limited resources and fierce competition from companies large and small. The financial toll of being struggling entrepreneurs was immense, with Jen eventually moving into a friend’s closet to save money.
But then they were gifted a kernel of hope from none other than Oprah Winfrey. After one of her scouts sampled their snack and reported back, she supposedly fell in love with it and eventually added it to her list of Favorite Things—a veritable kingmaker’s collection of noteworthy merchandise. This major milestone helped launch Pipcorn to nationwide recognition. (The product has since been featured three more times on Oprah’s list.)
So what exactly makes this snack special enough that Oprah herself had to share the word? Attribute it to the original heirloom kernels that caught the founders’ attention. This isn’t just ordinary corn but a traditional variety that’s been carefully cultivated for over a hundred years. Unlike the genetically modified kinds we typically see in our food today, heirloom corn is open-pollinated, meaning natural factors like insects, birds, and wind fertilize the plant and stimulate sprouting, allowing for greater genetic diversity that’s better for the environment.
The difference is a variety of distinct colors, a special crunchy texture, superior flavor, and more healthy nutrients like fiber and antioxidants. And Pipcorn’s commitment to quality extends to every element of its recipes, not just corn. The company uses only simple ingredients like non-GMO sunflower oil, sea salt, real spices, and organic cheddar cheese, and it refuses to incorporate artificial color additives, instead sourcing them from foods like paprika and annatto. Take the Truffle Mini Popcorn, one of Pipcorn’s original recipes. It flavors the heirloom corn with hints of real truffle, rosemary, and sea salt for a refined-yet-comforting snack.
Even after launching into snack stardom thanks to Oprah’s publicity, the founders knew that more resources would be essential to help their company grow. In fact, the mounting demand for Pipcorn was as much a burden as it was a blessing. In need of investors, the trio opted to accept an invitation to be on ABC’s Shark Tank.
One of the show’s “sharks,” Barbara Corcoran, saw potential in the company and extended a generous offer: she would invest funds in it and provide her mentorship as well. The results were instantaneous. “In the twenty-four hours after we aired, we had 7,000 orders on our website,” says Jeff Marin on Pipcorn’s website. “In the three months leading up to our airing, we had 26 orders. That’s a pretty significant impact!” The company’s founders say they knew they had “made it” when they finally saw their products on the shelves nationally at Whole Foods Market.
Since the founders’ successful TV appearance and subsequent guidance from Corcoran, Pipcorn has expanded its snack line to dozens of flavorful foodstuffs, including the Shark Tank Sampler Pack that spotlights ten of their most popular products. Additionally, they offer options such cheese balls, twists, and dippers in a variety of exciting flavors like jalapeño cheddar. Unsure where to start? Take the Pipcorn Snack Soulmate quiz for a personalized recommendation.
Even more new products are on the horizon, and one thing is for certain: as long as the brand stays true to the authentic ingredients—like distinct heirloom corn—that set it apart from other ultraprocessed snacks, they’re bound to be worth a bite.
